Morocco v Iran Preview

Returning to the World Cup after a 20 year absence, Morocco take on Iran in their first match of the competition at The Saint Petersburg Stadium on June 15th.

Sportsbooks offer Morocco as favourites to win the opening Group B fixture, but this is a tough one to call and with both teams looking good, this match could go either way.

Morocco and Iran have only met each other twice, with Iran victorious in both matches.

Unfortunately for both teams, they will be hard pushed to make it through to the knockout stages, as they’ve been drawn in Group B against Spain and Portugal.

Both of whom are up there with the favourites to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Morocco

Morocco head into the 2022 World Cup having not suffered a defeat in 13 matches.

Herve Renard’s squad had great success in the African Nations Championship, when they comfortably beat Nigeria 4-0 in the final of the competition.

Then Morocco went on to bag 2 solid wins against Uzbekistan and Serbia in their March pre-competition friendlies, and look strong coming into their first fixture against Iran.

Sportsbooks offer them as the favourites to beat Iran in their opening fixture, and they are more than capable of wining this clash.

Morocco have proven to be a tough team to score against, and with strong attacking players up front, they won’t be easy to beat.

Whether they can make it through to the Round of 16 is another thing completely, as they have still to face Spain and Portugal, but a victory against Iran would put them in a much stronger position ahead of those matches.

Iran

Iran are also in form leading up to their first fixture at World Cup 2022, only losing 1 of their last 14 matches, which was to Tunisia in the March round of pre-competition friendlies.

They may have been the first Asian team to qualify for Qatar, and have 3 Asian Cups under their belt, but Carlos Queiroz’s squad have never had much success in the World Cup.

From the group they've been drawn in it doesn’t look as if this will be their year either.

Queiroz has a good squad, but Iran do lack the skills to beat some of the stronger teams in the competition, and while they may just secure a victory over Morocco.

The best that Iran can realistically hope for is probably a 3rd place finish in Group B.
