Iceland at World Cup 2022

  • MANAGER: Heimir Hallgrimsson
  • CAPTAIN: Aron Gunnarsson
  • FIFA RANKING: 22
  • APPEARANCES: 0
  • WORLD CUP WINS: 0

Iceland will make their first ever appearance in the 2022 World Cup, having beaten Kosovo 2-0 to top their qualifying group and make it through to the competition in Qatar.

Iceland have improved a lot over the past few years, under Heimir Hallgrimsson, haven even made it to the quarter-finals of the European Championships back in 2016.

Unfortunately for them, they’ve been drawn in World Cup Group D and will be up against Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia in qualification for the next stage of the tournament.

While Iceland don’t have a raft of amazing players, they are a strong team, but this is the first time they have played in the World Cup and they may struggle at this level of competition.

Croatia have a lot of talented players, and Nigeria beat Argentina in a friendly recently after a tough qualification run for the Argentinians.

While it’s not expected that Iceland will progress, this will be one of the most interesting groups to watch, and who knows how Group D will end up with these 4 teams in it.
